Associate Language Arts/School Editor—St. Paul, MN

Job Summary

The Associate Language Arts/School Editor assists in the development and production of basal and non-basal print materials, and electronic and multimedia materials for the national secondary school market for Language Arts, English Language Learning, and other various disciplines (e.g. Economics, Anatomy and Physiology, and Biotechnology). The Associate Editor will work closely with editorial, developers, reviewers, print and digital production, marketing, and sales. The Associate Editor will work together and closely with the Managing Editor to ensure that the programs are released to the market on time according to publishing schedule. The Associate Editor will be responsible for editing, copyediting, and proofreading for student and teacher’s materials in digital and print format. In addition, this position will be responsible for development, design, organization, execution, accuracy, production, and advocacy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Edit and copy edit all the text for print and digital materials or otherwise coordinate with outside editors and copy editors. Make certain that the various authors who write specific sections all speak with the same voice.
  • Proofread print and digital materials.
  • Provide direction to developers or writers on revisions of manuscript (e.g., supply rewritten samples, or provide detailed instructions on factors to be incorporated in subsequent drafts).
  • Listen to and comment on audio and video products or coordinate proofing of audio and video materials.
  • Establishes project goals and objectives by working with Editors to conduct focus groups and Establish project goals and objectives by working with Managing Editor to conduct focus groups and questionnaires for educators about the essential and desirable characteristics for a language arts program or other programs (e.g. ELL, Economics, Anatomy and Physiology, and Biotechnology).
  • Develop schedules for when each component of the program’s various levels needs to be delivered to Editorial.
  • Organize and coordinate photo, art, and permissions research; acquire high-quality images and other permissionable items that meet project specifications; create art manuscripts; and create and maintain accurate and complete logs and files.
  • Participate in the development of new electronic and multimedia products for the Language Arts, Economics, Anatomy and Physiology, and Biotechnology markets. Hands-on involvement in all facets of the editorial process is required, as well as in the budgeting process.
  • Develop and/or write additional components that are needed based on research to improve the language arts program or other products/programs, in terms of both print and electronic formats.
  • Write and or copyedit, proofread any collateral material needed by the marketing department to push the sales and promotion of the materials.
  • Attend national, state and local conferences to support the sales and marketing efforts.
  • Maintain professional expertise in language arts instruction by talking with teachers and salespeople and attending professional meetings.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Managing Editor/Product Manager or Publisher and work closely with them.


Education and Experience Qualifications

  • B.A. or higher in Language Arts, English Language Learning, or other related discipline
  • 3–5 or more years of experience as an Educator
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in high school Language Arts or ELL education
  • Minimum two to three years’ experience editing, writing, or developing manuscripts for digital or print products

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Must be a team player, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and have strong organizational skills
  • Function effectively in stressful situations where deadlines are required
  • Excellent oral communication, written communication, and editorial skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable with technology

Desired Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • B.A. or higher in Secondary Education
  • Experience in writing, editing, and publishing, preferably educational materials
  • Knowledge and aptitude to work with online learning environments and other technology used in education
  • Knowledge and full command of Microsoft Office suite
  • Knowledge of NCTE and Common Core State Standards
  • Experience with digital training and delivery tools, including online courses, learning management systems, and testing
  • Experience incorporating digital delivery of educational content or training materials with print delivery of same
